Wofford opens spring football practice

From Wofford Sports Information:

The Wofford College football team opened spring practice on Monday night with the first of fifteen scheduled practices. On the first day, the Terriers worked out without pads for approximately two hours.

“I am very excited to be back out here,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “It is the start of a new year for us. We have been working hard conditioning and lifting, but being out here working on the basics of football is what the coaches and players are excited about. Our goal is to get back to the top. We had a good first step with the off-season program and we need to continue on a positive by having a great fifteen days of practice.”

Players that have changed positions for spring practice include Jordan Ingman to wide receiver from cornerback, Clark Gaston to linebacker from tight end and T.J. White to the offensive line from the defensive line.

Numerous players were back on the field after injuries last season. While all are participating in individual drills, some will be limited once hitting begins later in the week. Players back include LB Mike Niam, TE Kenny Barnes, FB Eric Breitenstein, HB Jeremy Marshall, S Hunter Hobson, HB Derek Boyce, FB Brad Nocek, LB Mark Flott, and HB Cody Burris.

“I think it is really important to have those guys back,” said Ayers. “Automatically we are a better football team because all those guys were players prior to getting injured. And what I mean by players are guys that were first or second teamers for us. We have already added a lot of depth to the football team getting those guys out of the training room and out here with an opportunity to work and get better.”

Wofford will hold the first of two scrimmages on Saturday, March 13 at 10:00 am. The second scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, also at 10:00 am. In each scrimmage, the Terriers will run 80 to 100 scripted plays.
