USC-FSU 3rd Quarter Recap: Gamecocks back in it, FSU 19-10

  • FSU takes second half kickoff and behind the running of Chris Thompson and EJ Manjuel moves down the field.  But as they’ve done most of the night, the Gamecock defense does not break and forces a 35 yard Dustin Hopkins field goal.  With 10:38 left in the quarter, FSU leads 16-3.
  • After an exchange of turnovers, the Gamecocks finally mount a touchdown drive.  Stephen Garcia hits Alshon Jeffery on two passes totaling 37 yards,  and a 30 yarder to Tori Gurley that carried to the FSU 11.  Three players later, Garcia threw a backwards pass to Ace Sanders who then threw back to a wide open Garcia in the endzone for a 3 yard touchdown.  With 3:49 left in the quarter, FSU leads 16-10.
  • The Seminoles get three more before the end of the quarter thanks to a short punt and nice return by Greg Reid to the USC 30.  Again, they have to settle for a field goal, this one of 45 yards by Hopkins.

USC-FSU 2nd Quarter Recap: No Ponder, no problem FSU 13-3

  • FSU forces a USC punt and starts a second quarter drive which reaches the Gamecock two.  But on fourth and one, the Gamecocks force a bad pass from Christian Ponder and turn the ball over to the offense.
  • FSU gets the game’s first touchdown late in the half.  With Ponder out with an injury, EJ Manuel is the Seminole quarterback.   He breaks off a 32 yards run to the Gamecock 27.  On the next play, his pass to the end zone is dropped by USC corner CC Whitlock.  Given new life, FSU’s Chris Thompson runs in from 27 yards out for a touchdown on the next play.  With 1:02 left in the half, FSU leads 13-0.
  • USC did not throw in the towel on the half.  The Gamecocks come right down the field with Garcia completing six passes.  A 21 yarder to Alshon Jeffery gets them to the FSU 23.  Spencer Lanning comes on to boot a 40 yard field goal on final play of the half.

USC-FSU 1st Quarter Recap: Lattimore out, USC down 6-0

  • USC takes opening kickoff and has an impressive drive going as Steve Spurrier calls up the passing game with four passes in five attempts including a 53 yarder from Stephen Garcia to Marcus Lattimore.  But on a play from the FSU 20, Lattimore catches a short pass and is racked by Greg Reid.  Lattimore fumbles and Kendall Smith returns it to the USC 29.  Lattimore remained down for a couple of minutes then walked off under his own power.
  • FSU reaches the USC 6 but is held to a 29 yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins.  With 8:08 left in the quarter, FSU leads 3-0.
  • USC’s next possession also ends with a turnover.  Garcia is forced to scramble to his right and forces a deep pass which is intercepted by Michael Harris at FSU 1.
  • Garcia is picked off again on the Gamecocks’ next possession.  His pass bounces off DL Moore and is intercepted by Kendall Smith and returned to the USC 27.  But again the defense gets a stop and Hopkins boots a 48 yard field goal.  With 2:42 left in the quarter, FSU leads 6-0.

South Florida stunner: Clemson goes down to the Bulls

Clemson QB Kyle Parker suffered broken ribs on this late first half hit

Clemson ended its season Friday in a mostly empty Bank of America Stadium on the wrong end of a 31-26 score against South Florida.  Not much went right for the Tigers offensively and the defense had one of its worst performances of the year.  The result was a loss and the program’s first losing season in 12 years.

Jamie Harper on a 1st half carry

Kyle Parker’s final game in a Clemson uniform did not go well.  Parker threw a costly interception in the first quarter that led to a Bulls field goal and then he was knocked out of the game just before the half when he broke his ribs trying to score on a goal line play.  He finished the game 11-17 with 134 yards and two touchdowns.

Tajh Boyd replaced Parker in the second half and was ineffective until he led the offense to a couple of late touchdowns to make the score respectable and give the Tigers a crack at comeback.  He finished 13-23 for 112 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Offensive coordinator Billy Napier thought Boyd did a pretty good job in what essentially was his first meaningful action of his career.

No one was shocked the Clemson offense struggled.  What did come as a surprise was the play of the defense.  While the unit didn’t play poorly, it was not the dominant force we’ve seen for most of the season.  Granted the offense didn’t do much to help them out and twice the defense was forced to defend first and goal situations following interceptions.  The Bulls scored 10 points on those two possessions.

Clemson finishes the year at 6-7.  South Florida finishes at 8-5.

Dabo Swinney takes blame for loss, losing record

Clemson's DeAndre Hopkins makes a catch in first half against South Florida

For the first time since 1998 and just the third time since 1976 the Clemson football team will finish the season with a losing record.  The Tigers 31-26 loss to South Florida in the Meineke Car Car Bowl leaves them with 6-7 record this season, their worst record since the 3-8 mark in ’98 season under Tommy West.

Swinney encourages team against USF

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney took full responsibility for the loss Friday and for the team’s struggles this season.  He vowed to correct the mistakes and rebound next year.  He called this season a “valley” for the program.

Swinney did not rule out making changes to his staff before next season.  When he was asked about potential staff changes he reiterated that he would do “anything necessary” to get things back on track.  If you want an indication of just how melancholy Swinney was after the loss you should note his postgame press conference lasted under six minutes.  They normally run 25 to 30 minutes.
