Sidney Rice makes first NFL Pro Bowl

Former USC receiver and Gaffney native Sidney Rice has been selected to play in this year’s Pro Bowl game. Rice has put up big numbers for the Minnesota Vikings this season. He’s taken advantage of playing with Brett Farve, another All-Pro, by putting up his best numbers of his young career. Rice has 77 catches for 1,200 yards and six touchdowns. This is his first Pro-Bowl selection.

Former Clemson star and current Broncos defensive back Brian Dawkins was selected to his 8th Pro Bowl.  The 14 year veteran remains one of the best defensive players in the game.  Former West Oak standout and San Fransisco 49′er punter Andy Lee also was selected to the team.

Also, Carolina Panthers running back De’Angelo Williams and Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers are on the the NFC team.

Clemson opens its ACC season Sunday at Duke and the Tigers figured to use the SC State game Tuesday night for some fine tuning.  The Tigers nearly got more than they bargained for.  The Bulldogs took the 21st ranked Tigers to the final seconds before falling 70-67 at Littlejohn Coliseum.  Jason Flagler had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but his three pointer was off the mark and the Tigers escaped with their 12th win against two defeats.

USC wraps up practice and is off to Alabama

The USC football team went through one final workout in Columbia today and now the team is making its way to Birmingham for the PapaJohns.com Bowl against UConn Saturday. They will resume practice sessions there tomorrow.  The team worked out in Williams-Brice Stadium today and it is the final time the seniors will ever play on that field. The last practice of the season always tends to be sentimental to the players and the coaches. You can also tell that these guys are ready to play someone after having more than a month off since their last game.

Offensive lineman Garret Anderson is one of the seniors that will be playing his final collegiate game Saturday. He is like a lot of seniors in the fact he can’t believe his time is already almost over. He did say that he is proud of the progress the program has made during his four years. He believes the team is about to turn the corner and is starting to do the things necessary to take that proverbial next step. He said they aren’t there yet but he thinks they are closer than they were when he was a freshman.
