Spiller’s Heisman run officially ends

Clemson running back C.J. Spiller was not one of the five finalist in the Heisman voting that was announced Monday on ESPN. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, Alabama running back Mark Ingram, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Stanford running back Toby Gerhart will be the five players in New York this weekend for the awards ceremony.

Spiller released the following statement:

“I certainly wanted to make it to New York for the Heisman presentation. It would have been great for this football program and Clemson University in general. But, I have done the best I could in every game. I have no regrets.

“I want to especially thank the Clemson fans for their support. I know they came out in great numbers in the fan voting poll (Spiller finished second in that poll) and have been very supportive of me my entire career.

“I want to thank all my teammates, especially the offensive line. We have one game left.We have not won a bowl game since I have been at Clemson. The seniors want to go out with a win.”

For the record, I voted Spiller first on my ballot. I went with Ingram and Gerhart two and three.  I didn’t think Spiller would win but I stand by the fact that he is one of the top five players in college football.  I will also say it is hard to argue with any of the five that will be going to N.Y. this weekend but Spiller really should be there too.
