Some notes hoops from our friends down at the College of Charleston:
Former College of Charleston standout forward Jermaine Johnson was drafted by the Reno Bighorns in the sixth round of the 2009 NBA Development League Draft. Johnson (6-7, 250) helped the Cougars to a 27-9 record last season. He played in 35 games and averaged 9.4 points and a team-leading 7.4 rebounds. He connected on 55.5 percent of his field goal tries hitting 132-of-238 attempts.
And now for some of the bad news (I saved it for the end because, hey, it is Friday and we need to be happy, right?):
College of Charleston junior center Jeremy Simmons has been suspended for violation of team rules, head coach Bobby Cremins announced on Friday. Simmons, from Lithonia, Ga., will miss Charleston’s exhibition opener against USC Aiken (5 p.m.) on Saturday and the Cougars’ regular-season opener at Coastal Carolina on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
Simmons (6-8, 230) played in 34 games last season averaging 6.8 points and 5.1 rebounds. He hit 57.8 percent of his field goal attempts connecting on 89-of-154.
