Coastal eliminated from regional

The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (47-16) saw its season come to a close with a 5-1 loss to Kansas (39-23) May 31 in game five of the 2009 Chapel Hill Regional at Boshamer Stadium.

Kansas got on the board in the bottom of the first. Freshman Anthony Meo struck out red-hot David Narodowski to open the frame, but walked Robby Price on four pitches. Price moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Brian Heere.

Kansas had chances to tack on more runs, but the Jayhawks stranded 16 runners on base. This included leaving the bases loaded in the second and third innings and running into double plays in the fifth and sixth frames.

The game would stay tied until the top of the seventh, when Jose Iglesias hit a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right center field to tie the game at one. Kansas came back to score three runs in the seventh. Tony Thompson opened the inning with a double. Bobby Gagg struck out Casey Lytle, but walked Nick Faunce and gave up a single to Zac Elgie to load the bases. James Stanfield grounded out to shortstop to make it 2-1 Kansas. Narodowski then singled to left to score two runs to make it 4-1 Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks made it 5-1 in the eighth as Thompson hit a solo home run to left field. It was his 20th home run of the season.

The win went to Brett Bochy in relief. He struck out a pair in 2.1 innings. Kansas starter Cameron Selik went 6.2 innings, allowing three hits and an earned run. The loss fell to Gagg, who gave up three hits and three runs in 1.1 innings. Meo allowed five hits and a run in 2.2 innings of work. The Chants pitching staff had 10 walks in the game.

Iglesias and Scott Woodward had two hits apiece for Coastal Carolina, while Thompson was 4-for-5 with two runs scored for Kansas.

Coastal Carolina ends the 2009 season after winning the Big South regular-season and tournament title. The Chants also had eight All-Big South honorees and four All-Big South Tournament selections.

Clemson falls to Oklahoma State

(AP)  Nobody is bashing Oklahoma State anymore.

The Cowboys, perhaps the most criticized selection for the 64-team NCAA baseball tournament, proved they belong Saturday night with a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Clemson in the Clemson Regional.

Neil Medchill drove in Micheal Dabbs with a two-out single in the eighth inning for the winning run in the second-round, winners bracket game. Medchill’s sharp grounder hit the glove of sprawling Clemson first baseman Ben Paulsen and trickled into the outfield grass, allowing Dabbs to score from second without a throw. Dabbs had reached second when the Tigers failed to make a catch in left-center on a play ruled a double.

Freshman Randy McCurry (4-1) shut down the Tigers in order in the ninth.

OSU coach Frank Anderson said his team, which finished ninth in the 10-team Big 12 Conference standings, never paid attention to outside criticism.

“We really haven’t thought about it that much,” Anderson said. “I never discussed it one time with our kids. What are you going to say?”

The Cowboys (34-22), the only unbeaten team in the regional, will play either Clemson (41-20) or Tennessee Tech for the championship Sunday night.

McCurry got the Cowboys out of an eighth-inning jam with the game tied and the lead run on third base. Lefthander Andrew Oliver took a shutout into the eighth before allowing two tying runs on singles by Chris Epps and Mike Freeman.

Cowboys Tom Belza and Mark Ginther broke open a scoreless tie with back-to-back homers in the seventh inning off Tiger starter Casey Harman. Ryan Hinson (2-1) came in after Ginther’s homer.

Clemson had eight hits, including two by Paulsen. OSU had only five hits, two by Medchill.

Belza’s homer was his fourth in two games, though only his sixth of the season.

“I’m not really sure,” Belza said when asked the reason for his playoff power surge.

The Tigers hit into two line-drive double plays and lined out a third time with a runner on second base.

“I thought we put some good swings on the ball,” Clemson coach Jack Leggett said.

The Tar Heels scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a three-run lead. Michael singled with one out and moved to second on a Mark Fleury walk. Rico Noel would make a diving grab on Gore’s liner to center, but Wheeler would walk Cavasinni to load the bases. The Chants went with Matt Rein after a 2-0 count to Jacob Stallings, and he would walk in Michael to tie the game at three. The big hit came off the bat of Bunting, who cleared the bases with a double to the gap in right field.

Noel hit his eighth home run of the season in the top of the fourth off White. The shot to the gap in left made it 6-4 UNC. Bowman then added on to his freshman home run record with a towering shot to left off White. It was his 13th home run of the season and cut the Tar Heel lead to 6-5.
